New app makes it easier for doctors to fill Bank shifts

17 July 2019

A new app called Locum’s Nest is coming to Mid and South Essex University Hospitals Group this summer, making it easier for doctors to find, book and receive payment for Bank shifts.

Demonstrating the Trusts' commitment to becoming one team, working together to deliver excellent care for patients, the Trusts will benefit from having access to a shared pool of doctors, improved staffing levels and a significant agency cost saving.

Founded by doctors, Locum's Nest uses advanced technology to deliver a smarter and more efficient way of managing Bank shifts. No longer is there a need to call, email or text to view and book a Bank shift, and paper timesheets are a thing of the past. Locum's Nest replaces all of these things and more, by automating the Bank process from start to finish.

With a direct link to the GMC, only fully licensed doctors can appear in Locum's Nest. The app provides a platform for doctors to create a profile by including their CVs, certificates, references and immunisation history, and instantly identifies those who are cleared to work. Doctors can also use the calendar and notification functionality to be in control of their shifts, and easily track their timesheets.

Dr Rebecca Martin, Deputy Medical Director, responsible officer at Mid Essex Hospital, said: "Growing a robust collaborative medical bank is a priority for our group of hospitals to deliver safe care to our patients whilst reducing the use of high cost agencies. The Locum's Nest app will make it much easier for our doctors to book into vacant shifts and ensure our wards are well staffed."

The app will be introduced at Mid Essex over the next few weeks. The Emergency Medicine Department is first, with shifts now added to the app and onsite training taking place. Basildon and Southend will follow, with further communications and training coming soon.

Locum's Nest is just one of the many changes coming to improve the Temporary Staffing service across our Trusts. At the beginning of July, Mid Essex's non-medical temporary staffing moved over to a new in-house Temporary Staffing team based at Britannia Park in Southend. Medical staffing at Mid Essex will transition to the same service in early September, thus ending the partnership with Medacs.  Basildon will move over to an in-house bank in September.
