New state-of-the-art facility for MSE Group
02 January 2020
Following refurbishment work, a dedicated interventional radiology (IR) suite has been created, meaning patients across mid and south Essex can now receive out-of-hours emergency IR treatment.
The suite has a new, state-of-the-art IR machine
- which is only the second of its type in the UK. This will
provide minimally invasive, image-guided treatments for a range of
conditions while lowering the risk to patients. After starting
in a staged way, the full service is due to be up and running by
the end of January.
With this equipment, procedures such as the
drainage of infected and/or obstructed kidneys and blocking of the
arteries - which can cause gastro-intestinal bleeding - can be
carried out. While these can cause life-threatening conditions,
they can be treated under local anaesthetic by IR doctors.
As part of the reconfiguration of services,
since March 2018 a 09:00am - 17:00pm weekend service has
rotated between our three hospital sites. However, as from last
month (December) the new weekend IR procedures began at the
centralised hub at Basildon Hospital.
We're now moving towards a seven
day service, with in-hours emergency and/or elective IR
retained at all hospitals and out-of-hours IR (weekdays 17:00pm -
09:00am and Friday 17:00pm - Monday 09:00am) delivered at the
Basildon site only.
Not only will this mean simplified care across
our hospitals it will also dramatically improve our patients'
Dr Qaiser Malik, Group Clinical Director for radiology, said:
"Our new hub, with its latest equipment and technology, immediately
speeds up the process for patients' as it reduces delays and gets
them back home quicker."
