Patient thanks hospitals after ‘fantastic’ treatment
02 January 2020
A patient who was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer has praised the mid and south Essex group for their partnership working.
Amanda Carey-Burke - who works in Basildon Hospital as an audio
transcriber in Human Resources - was diagnosed with breast cancer
in 2018. She then spent more than a year having what Amanda
describes as outstanding care and treatment from Basildon,
Broomfield and Southend Hospitals.
Within a week of being referred, Amanda had mammograms, biopsies
and tests before receiving her diagnosis.
Her 18-month care included being treated by a breast surgeon at
the Breast Care Unit in Basildon Hospital; her oncologist was from
Southend Hospital and is where Amanda had chemotherapy. Finally,
she had plastic surgery at Broomfield Hospital.
"It was a terrifying time for me but I received fantastic
treatment from all three trusts. Everyone works so hard and they
are all brilliant at what they do - the whole system runs like
clockwork," said Amanda.
"Speaking as a member of staff it's a real testament as to why
it's vital that the trusts merge, as we can do that much more for
our patients by working together. I have nothing but praise for the
collaborative working of the three trusts."
Amanda is now well on the road to recovery with her targeted
treatment finishing in April 2020.
