Who will you nominate for a Patients’ Choice award?

19 July 2018

The nominations window is open for this year’s Southend’s annual Hospital Heroes Patients’ Choice awards and the hospital have once again joined forces with the Echo and Southend Standard to help find three shortlisted nominees deserving of the coveted Patients’ Choice award.

Exclusively nominated for by the public, it's the patients', carers', relatives' and visitors' chance to say thank you by nominating a member of staff who has gone that extra mile to deliver the best possible service and really embodies our ethos of care with compassion.

Do you know someone who has made a real difference to you or a loved one at Southend Hospital?

Your nomination will help celebrate the fantastic work of a staff member or team at Southend Hospital who you feel go above and beyond their duty. Remember, only three go through to the public voting stage so the nomination forms really count. The closing date for nominations is Monday 30 July.

NR 49 (2018)

Last year's winner was Consultant Urological Surgeon, Panagiotis Dimopoulos, who received almost 60% of last year's record breaking 16,000 votes. He collected his award to thunderous applause, but like all the winners on the evening was humble about the accolade

On winning the award, he said: "It was a surprise, I feel really honoured. The true heroes are those struggling in their everyday lives for their health, I'm just one of the many people at Southend Hospital who helps improve their lives. It was quite unexpected to hear that I got over 8,000 votes, so I just want to thank everyone who voted for me."

On hearing of his win two relatives of his patients were quick to add further praise on the hospital's Facebook page.

Emma Bartlett, from Canvey Island, said: "He is the reason my dad is here. My dad is cancer free and living his life with his wife, daughters and grandsons. No matter how many time we thank him (Panos) it will never seem enough for what he has done for my family."

Whilst Fran Hayward, from Shoeburyness, added: "This amazing man definitely saved my son's life and without him I truly believe my son would not be here now with his wife, children and family. Thank you (is) just not enough."
