Our latest Hospital Hero - Sandra Lopez
25 May 2016
Our latest Hospital Hero is maternity healthcare assistant, Sandra Lopez
Sandra was nominated for her
commitment to looking after a patient with Parkinson's and Dementia
on Eastwood ward who had sustained a fall.
The patient was very
confused and understandably distressed, yet Sandra had a calming
effect on her.
Sandra's kindness, patience
and compassion are incredible. The relationship she had built with
the patient meant the medical team were able to facilitate oral
fluids which had previously been refused by the patient, in turn
allowing her to be safely transferred back to her own bed.
Sandra was nominated by women's and
children's directorate matron, Ruth Cozens who said: "Sandra had only worked as an HCA on
the maternity unit so this experience was out of her usual
"Her willingness to work in an area
new to her to support fellow colleagues and engage with a
challenging patient is admirable. She maintained a professional
demeanour throughout and acted as a role model for the student
nurse on duty.
"Every member of staff on
duty that day was amazed by Sandra and wanted to steal her! She is
thoroughly deserving of this award.
