Our latest Hospital Heroes - Falls Team
04 April 2017
Hospital Heroes
Our latest Hospital Heroes are our Falls Team, Kate Chapman and Vicky Cullen.
Kate and Vicky were nominated for their commitment to their
roles and always going the extra mile to try and improve care for
our patients.
Both have been instrumental in putting new safety measures in
place for patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment where patients
are isolated for several days. These patients are 'resident' in a
lead-lined isolation room for several days with no personal
contact, as they are radioactive following their treatment. They
are generally well patients, aside from their treatment, and are
able to be self-caring and contact staff on the unit by
telephone.
Following an incident where an isolated patient felt unwell and
subsequently collapsed, Kate and Vicky worked with the team in the
radiotherapy and staff across other Trusts to put procedures in
place should this situation happen again. These include hourly
proactive phone calls to the patient during the day and two hourly
visual checks overnight, ensuring staff are working within the
safety guidelines.
Kate and Vicky were nominated by Clinical Development Nurse,
Claire Buckell and Clinical Nurse Specialist, Sarah Haines who
said: "Our main reason for nominating them is for the work they do
behind the scenes that they rarely get thanks for. They are the
first to help when wards are in need and regularly engage with
areas of clinical and practice development outside of their
remit.
"Their passion and dedication to our patients is second to
none."
