Hospital Heroes

June’s Hospital Hero is neonatal staff nurse, Louise Cushing.

Louise is a passionate and dedicated individual who has worked extremely hard to improve bereavement care knowledge and practice amongst her colleagues in the neonatal unit team.

In addition to her day-to-day nursing duties, Louise has produced guidelines and checklists to ensure excellent communication and whole team dedication to providing support and compassionate care to bereaved families at what is a very sad and sensitive time.

She also recently coordinated a one-day training event on bereavement care which took place at Little Havens Hospice and was attended by a variety of hospital and Little Havens staff. The event included a varied timetable of experienced speakers in the field of baby bereavement care and attendees commented that they left feeling knowledgeable and empowered.

Louise was nominated by bereavement specialist midwife, Amanda Cushing (who shares the same surname but is not related to her).

Amanda said: "Louise is a real team player, a true leader and a pleasure to work with. She is extremely modest in her achievements and I believe she deserves recognition for all her hard work.

"Her support to me in my role and innovative approach to practice development is helping our whole team to improve and continue to offer an excellent service to families in our care."
