August's Hospital Hero - Kathleen Hackett
06 October 2015
August’s Hospital Hero is oral and maxillofacial surgery booking clerk, Kathleen Hackett.
Kathleen is incredibly passionate about patient care and is
dedicated to putting the individual needs of patients first.
She has significantly reduced waiting times through her
coordination of theatre and minor operation slots which in turn has
meant that patients are treated much more promptly. Her innovation
and initiative in developing a specialised system for booking means
the team can now offer local anaesthetic slots to some patients
within one to two weeks of referral.
Kathleen has also introduced a telephone reminder system for
general anaesthetic patients which has reduced the number of DNAs
to almost zero on the day of the procedure. She has also created a
patient standby list based on individual clinical needs to utilise
theatre slots that become available at short notice. Kathleen has
taken on this extra responsibility and associated workload without
any extra incentive.
Consultant oral surgeon Mr Kandasamy Ganesan, who nominated
Kathleen for this month's award, said: "Kathleen demonstrates a
passion to ensure patients' needs are met and theatre slots are
used efficiently. The clinicians and nurses regard her as a ray of
sunshine in the department.
"She always puts individual patient need first -whether it's to
get a child into a theatre slot to ensure they have enough time for
exam revision, or co-ordinating a head and neck cancer patient so
that they can start their treatment as soon as possible."
