Health Care

Southend University Hospital has acted swiftly to allay concerns in the light of recent reports of adverse reactions in some patients who have had ASR hip replacements.

All patients who have undergone surgery using this type of metal-on-metal artificial hip have already been contacted and are currently being monitored.

The hospital has also received calls from patients who have undergone surgery using other types of metal-on-metal hip replacements.

The hospital understands their concerns. Julie Lander, associate business director for orthopaedics, said: "While there is no published evidence to support these anxieties, this group of patients will be invited back to see their consultant who will answer their questions and arrange for any necessary tests."

Any patients who have concerns can contact a special helpline. The number is: 07534 100980 between 08.00 and 20.00 Monday to Friday.
