Two members of staff at Southend University Hospital have been officially recognised as NHS Heroes as part of a new national recognition scheme of the same name.

Wendy George and Zoe Gregori, general managers in the cardiology and respiratory department, were nominated by their colleague Nikki Baines for their commitment to constantly  improve patient care and quality of working life for staff.

"Wendy and Zoe are so supportive and dedicated to quality in the department," said Nikki, a principal physiologist. "People often overlook the work that managers do. I wanted to make sure they received the recognition they deserve - they are NHS heroes."

Launched by former Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to mark the 64th anniversary of the NHS, the NHS Heroes scheme honours the individuals and teams who go the extra mile to improve life for patients in hospitals, clinics and community care.

Wendy (pictured right) said: "I was absolutely speechless to receive this fantastic award. We always try and achieve the best for our patients and this award is recognition for all of our team's hard work and dedication."

Zoe (pictured left) added: "It's an amazing feeling to receive an award because someone thinks you're an NHS Hero - to me I'm just doing my job. I couldn't do it if it wasn't for the fantastic team I work with, so I'd like to say a big thank you to all of them."
