Hospital celebrates four years helping cancer patients to Look Good Feel Better
30 October 2014
Southend University Hospital is celebrating four years of hosting Look Good Feel Better’s free skincare and make-up workshops that have helped so many women come through their cancer treatment.
'Look Good Feel Better' (LGFB) was set up in the UK over 20
years ago and is supported by over 40 companies and brands within
the beauty industry. Working in conjunction with trained beauty
professionals, who volunteer their time and expertise, the charity
helps women and teenagers combat the visible side effects of cancer
treatment and, in turn, boost their confidence and self-esteem at a
time when keeping a positive attitude is crucial.
The two-hour workshops are held on a monthly basis at the
Macmillan Information and Support Centre, and are open to women of
all ages who have been receiving treatment for any type of cancer.
Each session is led by Look Good Feel Better's regional
co-ordinator, Sarah Wakeman, a qualified independent beauty
therapist, who got involved with the organisation over six years

through their cancer treatment.
"Coming to terms with cancer can be very daunting and some
treatments may result in appearance-related side effects that can
be very hard to cope with at a time when a positive attitude is
very important," says Sarah.
"The 12-step workshops are fun, friendly and totally relaxed;
they boost wellbeing and give women the freedom and confidence to
feel feminine again."
Macmillan information and support manager, Friederike Englund,
said: "We are so delighted with all that Look Good Feel Better has
done for our patients over the last four years.
"Sarah and her team of volunteers offer support to women that is
both practical and positive. Seeing so many happy faces at our
fourth anniversary celebration is testament to the incredible
inspiration they give to women when they are often feeling at their
