Tree-mendous Christmas tree lights switch on

10 December 2014

A sound of music accompanied the switching on of the Christmas tree lights at Southend Hospital, thanks to the talented children of Saint Pierre School choir in Leigh-on-Sea and local singer Reggie Manus, the winner of this year’s Southend Hospital’s Got Talent.

A large crowd of staff, governors and children from the nursery gathered to see the musical entertainment, eat mince pies and drink some warming non-alcoholic punch prior to the switching on of the Christmas tree lights opposite the main A&E entrance.

The switch on, which heralded the start of Christmas activities across the hospital, was performed by staff from the Bedwell ward of the hospital, who took on the privileged role after winning employees of the year at this year's Hospital Heroes awards.

Ward manager, Andrea Turner, said: "We were really pleased to be asked to turn on the lights, we had our pictures taken for the papers and everything which made us feel a little bit like mini-celebrities."

This year's event was hosted by acting chief executive, Sue Hardy, who added: "It was great to see so many people brave the cold car park and it was a real joy to see the children's choir and Reggie perform, they really helped raise our Christmas spirits and added a touch of festive magic to the switch on."
