Beat the autumn chill with a bracing walk

12 September 2013

Now there is a distinct autumnal nip in the air, what better way to keep the circulation flowing than with a brisk walk – and raise some cash for Southend University Hospital at the same time?

The annual Walk for Wards, sponsored by Ipeco, offers a choice of two options - the 7km seafront stroll or an 18k Hadleigh Hike.

The stroll, starting at Uncle Tom's Cabin, Shoebury, follows the seafront to Chalkwell shelter, while the more challenging hike continues through old Leigh, around Hadleigh Castle, returning to Chalkwell shelter.

Walkers can name which hospital ward or department to support with their sponsorship - every penny will go to their chosen cause and all funds will be very gratefully received.

Elise Fleetwood, events and corporate relations manager, said: "This event is always very popular with a great atmosphere of camaraderie amongst all the walkers, whether they be strollers or hikers.

"All we ask is that each participant raises a minimum of £15 for their chosen ward or department.

"September is a great time of year to hold an event like this - not too hot, but hopefully before the real winter weather starts to bite. We are looking forward to a mega line-up."

The walk, on Sunday, September 22, sets off at 10am. To register, or for more information, call the hospital's fundraising department on 01702 385337.
