Southend University Hospital volunteer Jill Slade bade a fond farewell to her colleagues in the hospital’s emergency department (A&E) after 29 years helping the NHS.

Jill, 79, from Eastwood, first began at Rochford Hospital, assisting in the running of a day centre for elderly people there.

After a couple of years she moved to Southend University Hospital where she volunteered as a guide, showing patients to their appointment location.

The keen Salvation Army member transferred to accident and emergency 15 years ago and never looked back. Jill says: "I've enjoyed my time and I will still help out, but it's time I put my feet up."

Voluntary services manager, Jane O'Connell, presented Jill with a bouquet of flowers and said: "Jill has put in countless hours over the years. She just gets on with the job. We will miss her."
