Hospital Heroes

Deadline for nominations extended - Monday 10 August, 9am

The Echo has once again joined forces with Southend University Hospital to find its Hospital Heroes Patients' Choice nominees.

It's the second year the hospital has opened one of the awards to the public to nominate a worthy recipient in the category of 'Patients' Choice'.

So, whether you have been a patient, relative or are related to a potential Hospital Hero, we want your nominations for people working at Southend Hospital who've made a real difference to you and your loved ones and get them some recognition.

Last year's first ever winner was Vanessa Byford, a health care assistant from Benfleet ward, a stroke ward at the hospital. She was described by her nominators as 'always smiling and is passionate about adding the personal touch to her work, doing her best to ease their worries and concerns.'

Sue Hardy, chief executive of the hospital, said: "This is a very special category as all nominations come in from the public, so we know that whoever is nominated is a shining beacon for the hospital and their profession. We cover so many roles here at the hospital so whether it is a nurse, a receptionist or a doctor, or someone from another area they can stand proud.

"Southend Hospital staff will tell you that they are just doing their job - which we know they are - but we also believe that they deserve recognition and in partnership with the Echo we are asking members of the public to nominate their Patients' Choice."

Chis Hatton, editor of the Echo, added: "As a community paper we are proud to be part of these awards to find our local heroes. I was fortunate to attend last year's event and I really was humbled to see so many people so passionate about caring for others and making a real positive difference to so many patients' lives and their families."

The deadline for nominations has now been extended until 9am on Moday 10 August. Nomination forms can be found on the Echo and Southend Hospital websites, as well as on the Southend Hospital Facebook page.

Those initially nominated will then be shortlisted by a panel of judges made up of Chris Hatton, editor of the Echo, Sue Hardy, chief executive of the hospital, Alan Tobias OBE, chairman of the hospital and Claire Hankey, head of communications for the hospital.

The three shortlisted members of staff will then appear in the Echo, both in the paper and online, and the hospital website and Facebook page, where members of the public will be able to vote for their Hospital Hero Patients' Choice award 2015.
