Getting your five a day has just become easier thanks to a fruit & veg market stall at Southend University Hospital aimed at encouraging staff, patients and visitors to eat more healthily.

The idea came from suggestions from staff as part of the hospital's staff forum and will now see the stall welcoming customers for the next three months as part of a trial.

Open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, 8.30am - 7.00pm, the stall offers everything from apples and bananas to Chinese pears, coconuts and slices of melon.

It is already proving to be quite the hit with staff, patients and visitors alike. Vikky Skidmore, from Southchurch, whose daughter, Lilly, aged 9, is a regular patient at the Trust, was clear about the benefits. She said: "This is amazing! Especially when I'm there at numerous appointments with my disabled daughter, or worse, when she's in and I need healthy food. Thank you, the stall is perfect."

Ifeanyi Nwonwu, Associate Director of Facilities, who helped drive the idea forward, said: "It's great it has already proved to be such a good talking point with everyone and I think it just offers people a little variety. We always welcome fresh ideas from staff to help drive and support a healthy lifestyle".
