When members of Southend University Hospital's Stroke Team settle down to watch Casualty on Saturday 24 September, it will all seem very familiar to them, that’s because they helped inspire it.

Back in February the Stroke Team welcomed Hannah Durham, a Story Assistant from the hit BBC show, down to the hospital from where the show is based in Cardiff and she was instantly wowed by all she learnt from an in-depth talk and tour by the team.

The Stroke Team advised on specific accuracies to ensure the episode is authentic, but was keeping mum about the plot to avoid any spoilers. Dr Paul Guyler, Lead Stroke Consultant: "Obviously Casualty is a fictional drama but it has to reflect the real medical world and its advances. It can also help educate the viewer in conditions such as stroke.

"If we can help influence the show and get that message out on a primetime Saturday night then we could help save lives not just across Essex but across the whole UK."

Episode six of the new series of Casualty will be screened on Saturday 24 September on BBC One.
