27 September 2016
The Macmillan Cancer Centre at Southend University Hospital have joined forces with Active Life to run a six-week fitness and well-being pilot for those on cancer treatment or those post cancer treatment.
The course is free and will be
held at St Luke's Church Community Centre, in Southend, and starts
on Monday 3rd October, 1130am - 12.30pm.
Activise through Recovery is a
programme designed to help participants feel healthier &
relaxed through a combination of exercises to work the mind &
Using pilates, stretch and
mindfulness techniques the sessions will help in reducing anxiety
and depression as it some point half of all cancer patients will

Fred Englund, Manager of the
Macmillan Centre explained: "Cancer patients are often too weak to
take part in an established course as their energy levels are much
lower and are too weak. By doing this course we hope it will help
people build their fitness levels up to where they can do a regular
Sarah Potts, from Active Life,
said :"Our experienced and friendly tutors will ensure that
participants are welcomed into a relaxed environment where we will
be helping cope with stress, reducing anxiety and worry, improving
sleep, confidence and increasing energy levels. Sessions are for
all abilities and exercises can also be done seated."
The course is designed for any
cancer patients, those on or after treatment, and is not just open
to patients just from Southend Hospital. The sessions will be held
at St Lukes Community Centre, Southend.
Fred explained: "For many the
hospital equals cancer and it's nice to be able to take events out
to people into the community. If the pilot scheme is a success we
could even have a rolling programme of courses.
"We are encouraging people to
sign up for the course but recognise that they may well not be able
to make all the sessions due chemo or feeling weak, this should not
stop them signing up."
There is enough space for 20
people on the course but it is estimated a fifth may not be able to
make each session due to how well they are feeling.
