Essex Dementia Day

25 January 2017

To celebrate Essex Dementia Day last week (20 January), staff and patients on Southend Hospital’s Eastwood Ward held an afternoon tea party which also raised £100 for the hospital’s Dementia Appeal.

It is estimated that there are 20,000 people in Essex with dementia. The hospital's Dementia Appeal aims to raise £100,000 to fund multiple projects to support patients with dementia and make their time spent in hospital more enjoyable.

Lucy Lock, Fundraising Officer from Southend Hospital Charity, said: "There was a lovely atmosphere, complete with music from bygone days and the area was decorated with bunting and balloons. There were also plenty of cakes and treats. Everyone made such an effort and you could see that it was enjoyed by patients and their relatives alike."

Cheryl Guinea, Eastwood Ward Manager, said: "It's so important to remember that people with dementia are individuals and every human being is unique. Staff on Eastwood Ward recognise this and are constantly looking for ways to improve and enhance the care we give our patients."
