New area for Pre-Assessment
09 December 2016
The pre-assessment team in Outpatients has been for some time running the service out of disparate rooms spread around what is known as the Outpatient Department (OPD) racetrack area.
This fragmented environment meant that patients often had to
visit different rooms which increased the time they had to spend at
their appointment and did not provide a seamless experience.
The Theatres, Critical Care and Anaesthetic directorate
management team worked together with the OPD Matron, nurse manager
and the estates & facilities team to agree and establish a
designated area for the Pre Assessment service.
This was achieved at the end of October with the team moving to
a dedicated suite of rooms, including a newly built dedicated
assessment room for HCAs to take patients physical measurements and
rooms for our nurse manager, pre-assessment nurses and consultant
Now the team is based along one side of the racetrack
which supports the team in their aim to provide a smoother service
and better patient experience.
Lesley Odeke, Lead Nurse in the Pre-Assessment Unit, said:
"Centralisation of Pre Assessment has resulted in a positive
outcome for both patients' and staff by increasing work
productivity and maximising time. It has created a
happier and better motivated team who feel valued for their role
within the directorate who can provide first class care for our
"It is a significant move for the team and a great morale boost.
Being in the dedicated area will allow us to expand the use of the
Synopsis IQ pre-assessment system and undertake further work to
improve the patient experience."
And the team have already noticed the huge positive impact it
has had. Staff have commented that equipment is easier to access,
there is a reduction in disruption, staff feel better supported;
there is improved interaction and patient trajectory has improved
during their appointment time.
