Macmillan Welfare Benefits Service relaunches

07 November 2016

Health Care

Every Friday from the start of November, a weekly face to face Macmillan Welfare Benefits Advice Service will be available at Southend University Hospital, offering advice and practical help to ensure that cancer patients receive the welfare benefit they are entitled to.

Fred Englund, the Macmillan Centre Manager at the hospital, said: "A diagnosis of cancer can raise concerns about financial security for patients, or their carers. The affected person may be unable to work for some time, and the loss of income can be devastating.

"Research by Macmillan has found that four out of five people are, on average, £570 a month worse off as a result of a cancer diagnosis."

The service will be delivered every Friday at two locations within the hospital: in the morning between 10.30am - 12.30pm at Radiotherapy, and in the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre during the afternoon between 1pm - 3.30pm.

Patients and carers are welcome to drop in but to ensure they are seen by the team it is best to book an appointment.

To contact the Welfare Benefits team, you can call the 24 hour answer phone on 0800 019 6003, or email macmillan@colchester.gov.uk.

For any other questions the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre can be contacted on 01702 385101 between 9am and 4pm weekdays.
