Thursday 8 March is World Kidney Day and staff at Southend University Hospital were out in force raising awareness of the importance of kidneys to our overall health, helping to reduce the number and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems.
Medical Matron Kelly Moore and her team manned an exhibition
stand, offering practical advice and also giving free blood
pressure and blood sugar checks.
She said: "We've had a fantastic response from both staff and
patients and seen over 120 people, it's been really positive and we
were also able to advise a few people with higher than expected
blood pressure readings to go and see their GPs.
"As well as World Kidney Day helping us highlight that high
blood pressure and diabetes are key risk factors in Chronic Kidney
Disease, it has also given us the opportunity to discuss other ways
of promoting health with staff and visitors. This included healthy
eating with a dietician and also disease prevention with a diabetes
nurse."
