Wedding renewal wish granted on ward
25 April 2018
Health Care
Dedicated staff on Bedwell ward at Southend University Hospital worked hard to create a memorable wedding service for one of their patients, Margaret Hayes and her husband Terry, who renewed their vows on Margaret’s birthday, Sunday 8 April.
The service was planned to take place in the community, but
sadly, due to Margaret's health, the decision was made for the
loving couple from Shoeburyness to have their ceremony on the
ward.
Margaret, 71, has metastatic breast cancer and is currently an
inpatient for symptom management and isn't scheduled for any
further treatment. Margaret has now been discharged home to spend
precious time with her family and friends.
Of the day and dedication of staff, Terry, 70, said: "We were so
pleased that we could renew our vows on the ward with our friends
and family around us and that the service could still be held on
Margaret's birthday.
The ward staff went above and beyond their role and several
members of staff came in on their day off to decorate the area to
make it as special as possible. We really couldn't thank them
enough."
Around 26 members of Mr and Mrs Hayes' family and friends
attended the service and enjoyed a tiered cake to celebrate the
occasion.
Matron, Avril Bunker said: "I am very proud of the staff on
Bedwell ward - they really gave their all, and Margaret and Terry
have been overwhelmed by their care, compassion and understanding
at this difficult time."
