‘Good’ rating for Ladybird Nursery says Ofsted

‘Children are motivated learners who confidently involve adults in their play’ is just one of the highlights of the latest ‘good’ Ofsted inspection for Southend University Hospital’s Ladybird Nursery, which they described as being ‘a warm, nurturing environment for children.’

Ofsted also said that its manager, Lynda Bartholomew, 'has a very clear understanding of the strengths and areas for development'.

Lynda, said: "Running a successful and vibrant nursery such as ours is a real team effort. Our dedicated and passionate staff put in an amazing amount of hard work, so it is wonderful to have it recognised in our 'good' rating.

"I'd also like to thank our parents and carers for their constant support."

The report also highlighted that 'all children's language is supported effectively, including those who speak English as an additional language' and that children who attend Ladybird 'are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.'

The nursery, based in a converted house next to the hospital, is open all year round and provides childcare, learning and play for 97 children aged from three months to five years old. It was last inspected in 2014, where it also received a 'good' rating from Ofsted.

Sue Bridge, Head of HR Operations at Southend Hospital, said: "Lynda and her team are justifiably proud of their achievement. The nursery at the hospital provides a vital and much-loved service for staff and local mums and dads. It's great to have this opportunity to celebrate their continued success."

In their latest report, Ofsted said:

  • Staff know the children well and have positive relationships with them. Staff's genuine interest in, and care for, the children is shown in ways in which they sensitively respond to children's emerging needs. Staff consistently interact with children in an interested and enthusiastic manner.
  • Parents are very complimentary about the support the setting offers to their children and to themselves. They talk about how friendly the staff are and how they care for children as if they were their own. Parents comment on the good communication and how involved they feel in their child's day.
  • Staff feel well supported by their leaders. For example, regular room and team meetings, along with individual supervision sessions, help top create a strong team ethos and a good capacity to continue to develop.
  • Children enjoy learning in a stimulating and exciting environment indoors and outdoors. Staff work resourcefully to make very good use of the premises, resources and the local environment, to enhance children's learning opportunities.
