Hundreds put their best fundraising feet forward for Southend Hospital

17 September 2019

A snaking line of over 200 fundraisers were dotted across Southend seafront at the weekend, all marching to the same beat, helping raise money for the Southend University Hospital ward or department of their choice.

Friends, families, work colleagues, young and old, some in fancy dress, even an entire scout group, had all got up early to take part in Southend Hospital Charity's Walk For Wards, a 7km stroll along the seafront from Uncle Tom's Cabin to Chalkwell shelter.

We all know that walking is good for losing a few pounds, but thanks to this year's event it is hoped that the hospital will gain over £15,000 from sponsored walkers.

Some of the wards and departments that will be benefitting from the annual fun-walk include Elizabeth Loury ward, the Early Pregnancy Unit, dementia servies, the critical care unit, the Forwards Appeal and the Emergency Department.

Elise Fleetwood, Events & Corporate Relations Manager for Southend Hospital Charity, said: "Once again local people have shown us how much they support Southend Hospital and the staff that have helped them or a loved one. Some are first timers and others are regulars on the walk, our thanks go out to each and every one of them. The response never fails to amaze us.

"I'd also like to thank our event sponsor Sea Life Adventure. Waitrose for providing the drinking water at the event,  ATP coaches and Enterprise Rent-a-car for taking those with worn out legs back to the start, and Ross Day Photography for his amazing images."

The weather was lovely and sunny; the participants were also beaming proudly as they crossed the finishing line at Chalkwell shelter, welcomed by cheers and a medal for completing the walk.

Lorraine Walter from 3rd Southchurch Cubs took part in the event with 10  cubs. She said: "We are raising money for Neptune Ward.  Our cubs are all children that have either been patients on the ward themselves, know someone that has been a  patient there or will have to use the ward at some point in the future.

"We felt it was really important for our cubs to give something back to a ward that provides our community with such a good service for our children."

The date has already been set for the event next year, Sunday 20 September, so if you fancy strutting your stuff along the seafront for Southend Hospital in 2020, contact fundraising on 01702 385337 or via fundraising@southend.nhs.uk
