A fun afternoon out for top dogs and their families is being held later this month. Paws in the Park dog show and sponsored walk is back for the second year running – and it’s bigger and better than ever.

The event is being held at Priory Park from 1.30pm on Sunday 25 June in aid of Southend Hospital's ForWards Appeal to raise money for new equipment.

All varieties and breeds are welcome at the event - from teacup Chihuahuas to crossbreeds to lumbering Great Danes and anything in between, but all dogs must be good-natured and kept on a lead.

Categories in the dog show include best disabled dog, waggiest tail, awesome old timer and the dog who looks most like his or her owner.

Last year's event, the first, was a resounding success. More than 70 dogs and their owners braved the pouring rain to put their best paws forward and take part.

Organiser Malachy O'Sullivan is hoping for better weather and an even bigger turnout this year. There will be stalls selling cakes and doggy-related products, with more pitches still available to book.

He said: "It's a nice afternoon out, it's very sociable and friendly and it's raising money for a great cause."

Registration is from 1pm, with the walk around the park starting at 1.30pm, followed by the dog show. Entry is just £7 per dog, which includes entry to the sponsored walk and all classes.

Stalls cost £20 to book and spaces are still available. To book a stall or to pre-register your pooch, please call the fundraising department on 01702 385337 or email fundraising@southend.nhs.uk
