The Obstetrics and Gynaecology team at Southend University Hospital has been highly commended by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for the experience it provides to trainees.

The accolade was awarded by the Specialty Education Advisory Committee of the Royal College, based on feedback from trainees undertaking gynaecology training at the hospital.

The team at Southend was ranked among the top 10 performing NHS trusts out of 140 units in the country.

Southend were third in the UK for overall satisfaction, second for gynaecology training, tenth for obstetric training and fourth for professional development, which is a fantastic achievement.

This was the best performance by any training unit in the East of England region, making Southend the best training unit in that area.

Mr Sanjaya Kalkur, consultant and college tutor for the department, said: "Our team of consultants, midwives, nurses, secretaries, sonographers and support staff have pulled together to ensure that trainees have the best possible experience during their time with us. It is fantastic news that our trainees have consistently been so positive on how they benefit from this experience.

"I'm really proud of the team who all work so hard to provide the best learning experience we possibly can for all our junior doctors."

Colleen Begg, Clinical Director Women's and Children's directorate, said: "Congratulations to the team on this achievement. It's a testament to their hard work and passion and is well deserved."
