Southend Hospital says thank you to its volunteers

11 June 2018

Volunteering

Southend Hospital volunteers were awarded for their dedication and long service at the recent fifth Volunteer Achievement Awards, which took place on Thursday 7 June.

The event, held during National Volunteering Week, was combined with a thank you party for all volunteers, which was held at the Saxon Hall, Aviation Way, Southend.

Scores of volunteers enjoyed a welcome drink and a slap-up tea of scones, sandwiches and cake - a real big NHS7Tea - and was attended by the hospital's Chairman Alan Tobias OBE and Director of Nursing, Denise Townsend, who both handed  out the awards during the evening.

Paying tribute to the hospital's 450 volunteers, Mr Tobias said: "Thank you for all you do. Your dedication and selflessness helps improve the hospital experience for patients, their families and staff."

Denise Townsend, Director of Nursing, said: "It was a lovely event and a real pleasure to see so many familiar volunteer faces attending. Each of them make such a positive difference and it was a great to take the opportunity to chat to them about why volunteer at Southend Hospital, thank them for their continued work and celebrate their much deserved success. They are a real jewel in the crown of the hospital and a true inspiration to us all."

Pearl helped set up the hospital's information desks more than two decades ago, and has been a fixture on the middle desk (old main entrance) ever since.

Long Service Awards

This group of volunteers perform a vital role. They are often the patient's first experience of our hospital, whether it be driving the patient to their appointment, or giving them directions when they get here, important at what can be an anxious time.
