Following media coverage on 26 June incorrectly asserting that Southend University Hospital has the worst waiting times in England and the subsequent retraction of the article, Medical Director Neil Rothnie said:

"I would like to reassure patients in mid and south Essex that reports they may have seen about Southend Hospital's waiting times are incorrect.

"We recognise that any delays to treatment can be distressing for patients, but we are treating more patients at Southend within the 18 week standard than this time last year, which is testament to the hard work our dedicated staff are undertaking to treat patients more quickly.

"We have made particular improvements within ophthalmology where just six months ago 1,661 patients were waiting more than 18 weeks for their treatment and at 1 April we had reduced that number to 538.

"We have more work to do but are making great strides in reducing waiting times for our patients.  We continue to work hard in collaboration with our colleagues in mid and south Essex to make a positive difference to our local population."
