Local charity champ Malachy O’Sullivan, from Shoebury, was recently back on Southend High Street for his 50th Mile of Coins collection, this time in aid of Southend Hospital’s Breast Unit.

The dedicated fundraiser has, in his time, supported more than 20 wards and departments at the hospital, as well as almost every appeal proposed by the charitable foundation, of which he is a Trustee.

The event saw Malachy and his team of volunteers collect £1,025, bringing the total to £47,000 since starting in 1998. He said: "I would like to say a massive thanks to all who have helped over this time, they give the one thing you never get back and that is their time.

"We hold three Mile of Coins a year, two in the summer and one at Christmas and we've stood in everything from howling winds to thunderstorms ,snow and now heat."

Malachy, pictured with his helpers, was presented with a giant 50th birthday card by Mick Thwaites, chairman of Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation.

Malachy added:  "It is always a great pleasure and privilege addressing the public and the total raised is testimony to their generosity, understanding and unwavering support."
