A group organised by Jiangsu Health Commission in China enjoyed a fact finding tour of the state-of-the-art Fetal medicine and maternity unit facilities at Southend University Hospital.

The main aim of this visit was to learn more about UK healthcare services for infants and pregnant and maternal women. The visitors from China were especially interested in the methods on how to prevent birth defects and lower mortality rates within the specialty and to explore potential collaboration in this area.

This group was led by Mr Liu Yibing, Director for Women and Infants Health Service, Jiangsu Provincial Commission of Health and Family Planning and the visit was organised by Essex International, which works with companies and organisations in the UK to help and encourage collaboration between the UK and the Chinese market.

The international visitors were impressed by the care pregnant women receive at the maternity unit, and also enjoyed a tour of the facilities. The group also had a short discussion with Yvonne Blücher, Managing Director of Southend Hospital regarding the potential for future collaboration with regard to training and joint research work with doctors in Jiangsu province.

Mr Mandeep Singh, Clinical Director of Women's & Children's services and Consultant in Fetal Medicine said: "Our Fetal Medicine centre and maternity unit has an excellent international reputation for providing high quality care and in particular participation in important research studies. Visits like this only reinforce our reputation as one of the best centres for fetal medicine and help attract the best doctors and midwives to seek employment here in Southend."
