Hospital Heroes 2016 - Patients' Choice award

10 June 2016

Health Care

Southend Hospital has again teamed up with The Echo to help find a Patients' Choice winner for our annual Hospital Heroes awards.

Voted for by the public, in conjunction with The Echo, it's the patients', carers', relatives' and visitors' chance to say thank you by nominating a member of staff who has gone that extra mile to deliver the best possible service and really embodies our ethos of care with compassion.

This individual or team can demonstrate any of the following criteria:

  • they take the time to care for others
  • they are good communicators, caring with compassion and empathy, treating others with dignity and respect
  • they respect patients' time, giving others choice and independence
  • they involve patients in their treatment decisions and choices

Last year's winners were the Neptune children's ward staff (pictured). One of the nominators said: "We are able to leave our daughter in their care and know, without any doubt, she is not only safe and cared for but she is also happy and comfortable in their care."

Sue Hardy, chief executive of the hospital, said: "This is a very special category as all nominations come in from the public, so we know that whoever is nominated is a shining beacon for the hospital and their profession. We cover so many roles here at the hospital so whether it is a nurse, a receptionist or a doctor, or someone from another area, they can stand proud."

Chris Hatton, editor of the Echo, added: "As a community paper we are proud to be part of these awards to find our local heroes. It's really humbling to see so many people passionate about caring for others and making a real positive difference to so many patients' lives and their families."

Closing date for nominations is Friday 5 August 2016.
