Access books and journals in the library, as well as online via NHS Athens. Learn how to conduct a literature search for various types of information using online healthcare databases and how to critically evaluate the information that you find.
The Education Centre Library is able to assist any library
member who would like support with:
- Using library resources, e.g. finding books and using the
- Finding and accessing journal articles
- Using NHS Athens
- Accessing eresources
- Searching online healthcare databases
- Printing, photocopying and scanning
Literature search training
Reading and evaluating literature (e.g. journal articles) is
important for keeping up-to-date with current research and
developments in your field and supporting evidence-based practice.
You can start by conducting a literature search on one of the
online healthcare databases that are available via NHS
The library offers one-to-one or small group training for those
who are unfamiliar with online healthcare databases or would like
to refresh their searching skills. Training presentations can also
be provided for larger groups on request.
Appointments can be tailored to meet your needs but generally
last up to two hours and will involve conducting a sample search on
a topic of your choice using the database(s) appropriate for your

Critical appraisal refers to the critical evaluation of evidence
contained within research studies and articles to assess their
quality and relevance. It is therefore important for assessing and
using research information effectively in developing evidence-based
