Literature search training

Reading and evaluating literature (e.g. journal articles) is important for keeping up-to-date with current research and developments in your field and supporting evidence-based practice. You can start by conducting a literature search on one of the online healthcare databases that are available via NHS Athens.

The library offers one-to-one or small group training for those who are unfamiliar with online healthcare databases or would like to refresh their searching skills. Training presentations can also be provided for larger groups on request.

Appointments can be tailored to meet your needs but generally last up to two hours and will involve conducting a sample search on a topic of your choice using the database(s) appropriate for your topic.

Critical appraisal training

Critical appraisal refers to the critical evaluation of evidence contained within research studies and articles to assess their quality and relevance. It is therefore important for assessing and using research information effectively in developing evidence-based practice.

The library now offers critical appraisal workshops (2 hours), providing an introduction to critical appraisal, plus the chance to practise appraising two research papers - one quantitative and one qualitative.

Additional workshops can be arranged for hospital teams/departments on request, at a time to suit you.
