Surgical / wound management unit
Balmoral Ward is a unique, award-winning service and team,
specialising in wound management. It provides a trust-wide
service for the management of complex wounds.
The 16 bedded ward is the hub for the wound management team
which includes the four nurse specialists and two consultant
surgeons. We take referrals from within the trust and also
from the community partners e.g. GPs, community nurses, podiatrists
and tissue viability nurses.
The ambulatory wound unit is also based on the ward. This is a
direct access service running appointments so patients can be seen
on the day of referral which allows us to evaluate and manage
wounds, particularly the acute diabetic foot. This pathway
was developed by the wound management team in conjunction with
their community partners. The initiative has seen the rate of lower
limb amputations reduce dramatically in this part of Essex.
Balmoral ward also cares for patients undergoing vascular
investigations and procedures, plastic surgery and some minor
surgical procedures. It is also the designated ward for
surgical patients with learning disability.
The ward has its own dedicated rehabilitation staff and access
to a psychologist for patients undergoing lower limb surgery.
