Benfleet ward

Acute stroke unit

Ward details

Southend stroke unit has 14 acute stroke beds on Benfleet ward and 26 stroke/neuro rehabilitation beds based on Paglesham ward.

The acute stroke unit provides continuous specialist stroke care for patients, encompassing all aspects of stroke care in accordance with the Royal College of Physicians' guidance starting on admission to the unit. The stroke service is able to provide clot busting treatment to patients admitted within four hours of the onset of their symptoms when this is appropriate for the patient's particular condition.

The acute stroke unit has six beds with state of the art monitoring facilities.  All investigations and treatments are carried out as quickly as possible to minimise the risk of further strokes happening.

The team aim to ensure that admission to this unit will be of benefit to the patient and their families.

Patients will be individually assessed by all members of the multidisciplinary team(MDT) to determine their suitability for admission to the unit. The MDT incorporates doctors, nurses, specialist nurses, stroke support worker, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehab assistance, dietitian, pharmacist, speech and language therapists, social workers, community stroke team and feeding buddies.

The stroke multidisciplinary team provide education and support to patients and relatives throughout this potentially difficult period of hospitalisation.

We aim to encourage patients to take up or renew interests and activities that will enable them to continue to lead a full and interesting life.

The team help patients return safely to their homes wherever possible and, in cases where this is not possible, to help them and their families make decisions regarding future care.

We have an information room for patients and relatives to provide them with information on all aspects of post stroke care and neurological conditions.

We have an approachable team who will endeavour to answer any questions you may have and the team aims to provide a pleasant and cheerful environment to help patients benefit from their stay in hospital.
