Acute stroke unit
Southend stroke unit has 14 acute stroke beds on Benfleet ward
and 26 stroke/neuro rehabilitation beds based on Paglesham
The acute stroke unit provides continuous specialist stroke care
for patients, encompassing all aspects of stroke care in accordance
with the Royal College of Physicians' guidance starting on
admission to the unit. The stroke service is able to provide clot
busting treatment to patients admitted within four hours of the
onset of their symptoms when this is appropriate for the patient's
The acute stroke unit has six beds with state of the art
monitoring facilities. All investigations and treatments are
carried out as quickly as possible to minimise the risk
of further strokes happening.
The team aim to ensure that admission to this unit will be of
benefit to the patient and their families.
Patients will be individually assessed by all members of the
multidisciplinary team(MDT) to determine their suitability for
admission to the unit. The MDT incorporates doctors, nurses,
specialist nurses, stroke support worker, physiotherapists,
occupational therapists, rehab assistance, dietitian, pharmacist,
speech and language therapists, social workers, community stroke
team and feeding buddies.
The stroke multidisciplinary team provide education and support
to patients and relatives throughout this potentially difficult
period of hospitalisation.
We aim to encourage patients to take up or renew interests and
activities that will enable them to continue to lead a full and

possible and, in cases where this is not possible, to help them and
their families make decisions regarding future care.
We have an information room for patients and relatives to
provide them with information on all aspects of post stroke care
and neurological conditions.
We have an approachable team who will endeavour to answer any
questions you may have and the team aims to provide a pleasant and
cheerful environment to help patients benefit from their stay in

Visiting and other instructions
Visiting hours are 07:00 to 21:00.
Protected mealtimes are maintained on this ward; no visiting
unless arranged with nurse in charge.
Please restrict visitor numbers to a maximum of two per
patient unless previously arranged with the ward
You can make an appointment to speak with doctors or the ward
manager by arrangement with the ward clerk or nursing staff.
During 07.00-07.30, 13.30-14.00 and 19.30-20.00 the nurses will
be having handover and may not be able to answer phone calls.
Nurses wear Red Tabards when undertaking Drug Rounds. We request
disruption at this time is kept to minimal
