Medical Education
The Education Centre is the hub of the hospital for education.
It is the home of our extensive library, our 120 seat Lecture Theatre, Simulation Suite and 13 teaching rooms of various sizes.

The Medical Education team are based in the Education Centre and
led by Dr Lucy Coward, our Director of Medical Education.
We work closely with our Medical HR colleagues, Medical Schools,
Royal Colleges and Health Education East of England (HEEoE) to
ensure high quality education and training for all medical staff at
Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We promote
continuous professional development for all grades of doctors and
provide careers support and guidance.
Katie Palmer: Medical Education Manager
Katie is responsible for the day-to-day running of the
Department, and oversees a team of 11 Medical Education staff, as
well as the Library and Reception teams.
Pam Barton: Posts and Placements Medical Education
Pam is responsible for quality assessment of postgraduate
education and trainee support (all grades including SAS Doctors).
She is actively involved in securing Foundation and Core trainee
placements and rotations and works closely with Dr Rathore, our
Foundation Training Programme Director. Pam alongside Dr Frances
Borg, our Careers Lead ensures up to date careers advice is always
available. Pam is also responsible for ensuring that educators
receive the appropriate training to undertake their roles. Pam
works Monday - Thursday.
Nicole Edgell & Nicola Mason: GPST Programme
Coordinators
Nicole and Nicola are the first point of contact for the
GP trainees. They are responsible for co-ordinating,
checking and administrating programme placements, updating and
maintaining information on Intrepid's programme manager and RCGP
ePortfolio (including updating clinical and educational
supervisors). They work closely with the Training Programme
Directors and Health Education East of England. Nicole works
Tuesday - Friday and Nicola works Tuesday - Thursday.
Lisa Hollebone: Medical Education
Administrator
As well as supporting the GPST Programme Coordinators,
Lisa provides administrative support in Medical Education and
manages the Travel/Relocation Claims of Trainees. Lisa works on
Wednesdays.
George Lilley: Medical Education Assistant
George supports the whole team with administration tasks. He is
responsible for tracking Departmental Induction sign off &
attendance at teaching sessions and events and updating iLearn.
George is often seen supporting Joe Hicks and Toby Brittain with
the day to day set-up of the Education Centre.
Gill Parsons: Assistant to the Medical Education
Manager
Gill provides operational support to Katie Palmer and
is the Medical Education Administrator for the Quality
Improvement Committee. Gill generally works Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday.
Halina Riseley: Medical Education Administrator
Halina is responsible for study leave as well as
organising monthly GP mini masterclasses. She is also
responsible for administration support for the Southend Medical and
Dental Society. Halina works Tuesday to Friday.
Jenny Gunning & Mary Bishop: Undergraduate
Administrators
Jenny and Mary provide administrative support for all medical
students on placement at Southend Hospital, ensuring
that training and educational needs are met, in line with
medical school requirements. They also support and facilitate work
shadowing opportunities, an annual careers morning and MEDIC
insight day for local school students and manage the
production of teaching feedback summary reports for all medical
student teaching sessions. In addition, they organise
the administration for Anglia Ruskin University Mentor Update
programme. Jenny works Monday - Thursday and Mary works
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Elaine Spall: Medical Education Administrator for Teaching
Programmes
Elaine organises the GP Refresher Course which is held
twice a year, as well as the weekly F1, F2, Medical ST1/ST2 and
Grand Round teaching programmes. Elaine also manages the
production of teaching feedback summary reports for the above
teaching sessions and runs the Medical Education Twitter
account.
Sue Wilkinson: Foundation Programme Coordinator
Sue supports our Foundation Doctors. She coordinates the
Preparation for Professional Practice course for our incoming F1
Doctors and also plays a key role in the Doctor's Annual
Induction Day every August. She deals with
all Foundation ePortfolio queries and year end sign
offs. Sue works Monday - Thursday.
