Career Development Opportunities
Your educational supervisor will be your first point of contact regarding careers support or guidance but there is a dedicated Careers Lead in the Trust.
Our foundation doctors are welcome to attend teaching
sessions/MDTs/clinics in other specialties to build up knowledge or
assist in deciding future career paths.
We also encourage and facilitate tasters (5 day placements) in
other specialties within the hospital. Doctors who want to
experience a taster can take time off from their study leave
allocations, (F1 can 'borrow' the study leave from their F2
allowance and declare it on their TOI form at the end of their F1
year), or use their annual leave. Example tasters are listed
below:
Surgical Specialties:
- A&E
- Anaesthetics

Foundation trainees with an interest in teaching are offered the
chance to take on role of Junior Clinical Teaching Fellows (JCTF) -
responsible for organising and providing teaching sessions and Mock
OSCES for medical students on placement at Southend. The
Trust currently provides a one day course (free of charge for our
JCTF) which explores medical education theory and developing the
clinical teacher. There is also the chance to sit on the Medical
Education Board as the F1 and F2 representative to improve your
leadership skills. Another great achievement to put on your
future applications!
