Why choose Southend University Hospital?
It’s great that you are considering our hospital for your foundation training. Southend is a fantastic hospital to work at, with 100% of our trainees saying they would reapply for their jobs again.
You will be working in a very friendly hospital with a large
dedicated education centre. At the recent Health Education
East of England visit, foundation trainees reported Southend
Hospital as being 'head and shoulders above other
trusts'.
Your F1 journey will start with our award winning Preparation
for Practice programme during which time, apart from the usual
mandatory training, you will be shadowing your incoming firm.
During your year here, you will have up to 3 hours of
mandated teaching as well as the option of choosing from a wide
variety of hospital wide teaching opportunities. You
will be encouraged to undertake audits or a QI project and to
become a part of the education team as a Junior Clinical Teaching
Fellow (JCTF) or F1/2 representative.
You will have the opportunity to practice in our Simulation
Suite and Bioskills Lab to enhance your practical
skills. The clinical workload is busy and varied
providing excellent F1 experience in core general medical and
surgical specialties and F2 experience in specialties such as
Paediatrics, Obs & Gynae, Public Health, Psychiatry and General
Practice. The whole service is Consultant led with Consultant
presence in all morning handover meetings held in our dedicated
NerveCentre.
At the end of your year here, you will have the opportunity to
win local hospital awards, in a variety of categories, to further
develop your career.
In your time off, you will have easy access to both London and
the nearby countryside and beach.
Please look through the website for more details on various
aspects of your education and training at Southend.
