Routine laboratory hours and general enquiries:

08.30 - 17.00 

Routine mortuary hours:

08.00 - 16.30 Monday to Thursday

08.00 - 16.00 Friday

Out of hours service

The Cellular Pathology Department does not offer an out of hours service.

For Mortuary Staff out of routine hours, please contact the main hospital switchboard. 

Availability of advice and interpretation

Advice and interpretation of reports is available from the relevant reporting Consultant during working hours

Urgent tests

If the doctor regards the specimen as particularly urgent, contact should be made with the department or directly with the consultant pathologist.

The forms listed below should only be used when the requestor is in an area where the ICE System is either unavailble or offline. In cases where ICE is availble please continute to request electronically.

Specimen labelling

Please see the sample acceptance criteria guidance.  

All routine requests should consist of a completed request form and a correctly labelled specimen.

The specimen should be labelled with the patient name a nd NHS number and either of the following unique patient identifiers:

  • Date of birth

  • Unit number/secondary number

Please complete the request form as comprehensively as possible.  A brief clinical summary, including any treatment e.g. radiotherapy or drugs, is helpful and should always be given.
