EBUS (Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration)
Request on ICE (if ICE is not available, a downloadable
non-gynae request form is available via a link in the Cellular
Pathology section of the Pathology Handbook).
Reports are normally issued between 4-6 days of receipt. Samples
requiring extra work may take longer, please contact the lab for
further information on delayed reports.
Material obtained should be placed in a universal containing
preservative fluid (Cytolyt) labelled with the patients name, DOB
and NHS number (hospital number is acceptable if the NHS number is
not available). Alternatively the material may be spread along the
length of a glass slide. Prepared slides must be fixed immediately
in alcohol or air dried (preferably one of each) before dispatch to
the laboratory. Slides must be labelled in pencil with the patients
name, DOB and NHS number (hospital number is acceptable if the NHS
number is not available) and with an indication as to the method of
fixation. The slides must be sent to the laboratory in a slide
N/A - Material in universal containing Cytolyt or slides if
A universal containing a preservative (Cytolyt). These can be
obtained from the laboratory.
If the material is placed in Cytolyt, a slight delay between
collection and transport is not a problem as the sample is fixed.
Any slides should be sent to the laboratory as soon as possible
after collection. Outside laboratory hours, specimens can be left
in the post box outside the pathology reception on the first floor
of the tower block.
Store at 2 - 5ºC until the sample is prepared.
