Specimen transport

Specimens should be sent to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.  Outside laboratory hours, specimens can be left in the post box outside the pathology reception on the first floor of the tower block

Specimen

Material obtained by aspiration should be spread along the length of the slide, using another glass slide placed horizontally, pulling the slides apart.  Prepared slides must be fixed immediately in alcohol or air dried (preferably one of each) before dispatch to the laboratory.  Slides must be labelled in pencil with the patient's name and hospital number and with an indication as to the method of fixation.

Turnround times

Reports are normally issued between 4-6 days of receipt.  Samples requiring extra work may take longer, please contact the lab for further information on delayed reports.
