CSF - Neurodegenerative screen



Clinical Indications

CSF neurodegenerative screen consists of CSF S100 beta, CSF Total Tau, CSF A-Beta 1-42 and CSF phosphorylated Tau as markers for the investigation of possible Alzheimer's disease in non-typical patients. They reflect the presence of neurofibrillary tangles and neurodegeneration.

Investigation of possible Alzheimer's disease in young patients or those without a typical presentation or history.

CSF must be collected into a polypropylene Universal tube and sent to Pathology immediately


Minimum CSF volume is 800 ul ( the referral lab require 3 separate aliquots of 250 ul)


30 ml polypropylene Universal tube, available on Neurology Ward and from Pathology

Lab Handling

Separate into 3 labelled polypropylene separation tubes (either 1.2 ml SAS pots or PTH pots). Store at -80 until despatch. Despatch to referral lab on dry ice by courier.

Causes for Rejection

Collected into wrong container. Not a request from Neurology
