Factor 13 screening test

Clinical Indications

Re-bleeding from umbilical stump.

Poor clot formation leading to re-bleeding from "healed" trauma sites.  

Suggest order "Bleeding Disorder Screen" as preliminary investigation unless directed by the laboratory or investigating a known factor deficiency

Patient should be bled with minimal stasis

Patient Preparation

Patient should ideally be at rest

Specimen

Fresh citrated Blood (within 2 hours of collection)

Volume

4.5 ml blue citrated blood

Container

Vacutainer blue top

4.5 ml blue citrated bottles

Collection

Clean venepuncture; sample transported to laboratory immediately after collection

Causes for Rejection

Under-filled, clotted or haemolysed samples

Reference Range

Screen will be reported as "Normal" or "Abnormal-suggestive of FXIII deficiency
