To confirm or exclude presence of Haemoglobin S in cases of urgent clinical need prior to surgery etc

The test will be performed on urgent requests (pre-op) where there is insufficient time to perform HPLC. Contact the laboratory to arrange urgent testing.

Causes for Rejection

Incorrect sample labelling/ clotted sample/ haemolysis .

Interpretation

This test is not reliable on :

i) infants less than 6 months old

ii) in the presence of abnormal levels of serum protein, extreme leucocytosis and hyperlipidaemia.

HPLC will be performed on all requests for Sickle test. Hb variants requiring confirmation may be sent to Reference Centre.
