Clinical Indications

Haptoglobin is useful in the diagnosis and assessment of intravascular haemolysis.

Haptoglobin is a 'suicidal' protein which mops up free haemoglobin in the circulation; the resulting complex is then broken down.

Low levels of haptoglobin are therefore suggestive of haemolytic anaemia
