Clinical Indications

Acute jaundice with ALT >300 u/L and/or raised bilirubin

Test Includes

Detection of IgM antibody to Hepatitis A virus; this test detects active Hepatitis A infection

Specific Criteria

Please give detailed clinical information, including date of onset/contact with the suspected infection

Only performed on patients showing raised ALT (>300 u/L) and /or bilirubin

Turnaround Time

All tests will be performed on the next routine working day after receipt of the sample
If the in-house test is positive the sample will be sent to a Reference Laboratory (Addenbrookes) for confirmation; results will usually be available 7-10 days after the original screening test

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled sample
Delay in sample reaching laboratory
ALT / bilirubin not sufficiently raised

Lab Handling

Store sample at 4°C prior to testing; store for 3 months at -40°C after testing
