Hepatitis B surface antigen


Hepatitis B serology, HBV testing

Clinical Indications

Acute jaundice, history of IVDU or other risk behaviour

Test Includes

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg); if positive markers of infection HBe-antigen, HBe-antibody and HB core IgM will be performed
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is included in the routine ante-natal screen

Specific Criteria

Please give detailed clinical information, including date of onset/contact with the suspected infection to enable the correct test(s) to be performed

Turnaround Time

All tests will be performed on the next routine working day after receipt of the sample
If the HBsAg test is positive, a confirmatory procedure and markers of infection will be performed in-house, either on the day of the original test or the next routine working day

Unlabelled / inadequately labelled sample
Delay in sample reaching laboratory

Aliquot and store at 4 prior to testing; store at -40ÂșC for 3 months following testing
