For patients with positive antibody screening test and sample requested by the laboratory

Specific Criteria

As requested by the Blood Transfusion laboratory

Turnaround Time

10 working days. Sample will be sent to referral centre (NBS)


Whole blood in pink Blood transfusion (EDTA) tube

Samples must be labelled in full and signed by person collecting the blood, in accordance with the Blood Transfusion specimen acceptance policy

Samples should be transported to laboratory immediately.

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled /unsigned sample. Incorrect or inadequate patient identifiers provided. Insufficient sample volume. Poor sample quality due to deterioration, haemolysis, presence of clot


Report will be issued by the National Blood Service. An patient information pack will be provided by the NBS for patients with an  identified antibody and will be issued to the GP or ward. This should be forwarded to the patient. An antibody card for the patient to carry will be included in the pack.
