Urine Albumin/Creatinine Ratio (Microalbuminuria)

Clinical Indications

This is recommended in Diabetes Mellitus and chronic kidney disease stage 3a and identify early stage disease so progression can be slowed by appropriate therapy. It should be measured on diagnosis and, if normal, repeated annually. If abnormal please follow the attached algorithm.

Specific criteria

Early morning urine sample required

Patient Preparation

No vigorous sporting exercise or sexual activity for 2 days before collection. Samples should not be collected when there are symptoms of UTI or thrush.

Turnaround Time

3 working days


Early morning urine in white-top universal


5.0 ml (2.0 ml minimum)


Urine bottle white top


Samples should be transported to laboratory on the same day as collection

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled or incorrectly labelled sample; not early morning urine; delay of more than 5 days in sample reaching laboratory or in wrong sample container
