Von Willebrand factor (VWF)


VWF; VW:Rag, Rag, RiCof

Clinical Indications

Bruising, recurrent severe nose bleeds, menorrhagia, postoperative bleeding, relevant family history

It is strongly suggested to request a Bleeding disorder screen instead unless investigating a known case of von Willbrands disease.

Test includes Von Willbrand factor antigen and activity levels

Specific Criteria

Relevant clinical details/ history. Discussion with Consultant Haematologist may be suggested

Patient Preparation

Patient should ideally be at rest, be bled with minimum statis and not in acute phase reaction

Turnaround Time

2 weeks


Fresh citrated Blood (within 2 hours of collection)


4.5ml citrated blood


4.5 ml blue citrated bottle

Vacutainer blue top


Clean venepuncture; sample transported to laboratory immediately after collection

Causes for Rejection

Under-filled, clotted or haemolysed samples
